Yes, the Combat mast is an RDM. It's a tapered RDM. That means it's an RDM with SDM character, to an extent. That's to say it's stiffer in the lower sections, progressively flexing more towards the tip as the diameter reduces, but with much less deflection than in typical RDM's. This is done with pre-preg materials and different construction methods - plus it's tapered, not one constant diameter.
In our testing, it came the closest to an SDM performance as any RDM has. NP wasn't going to rush to market with a comparable product to current RDM's, because testing shows current RDM's did not perform to NP standards. NP has designed and introduced a superior RDM product.
That said, it still will not be NP's top performing mast. The X9 mast will still be the best mast for any NP sail to achieve maximum range and performance. The Combat will offer the next closest performance, but with RDM durability.
I can hear comments coming already, but reserve your judgment until you try one, please. I have sailed both, and I will say I still prefer the X9, mostly because I use big sails and the X9 is more stable because it deflects less at the boom (the diameter is bigger). I do like the Combat mast's feel far better than any RDM I've used before, and I can see lots of sailors will love it. But, in my opinion, it does not perform exactly like an SDM. Close, but not exactly.
Combat masts should be in stores by August.

Y disent pas un mot sur les fourreaux. Y auraient pu dire:
the rdm not déchired the mast pannel.
